Scientist in charge: Axel Roers
I am Professor for Immunology and director of the Institute for Immunology at the Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden. My group has a longstanding interest in regulation of immune responses. We investigate molecular mechanisms underlying autoimmunity in type I interferon-driven diseases like Systemic lupus erythematosus and Aicardi Goutières syndrome. On the other hand, we address in vivo functions of mast cells in health and disease. While the pathogenic role of mast cells in allergic disease has been extensively characterized, much less is known about beneficial functions of these cells in pathogen defense, tissue remodeling and angiogenesis. Also the role of mast cells in cancer is controversial. We have generated novel genetic tools for investigation of mast cell in vivo functions which greatly facilitate exploration of mast cell biology. I co-author over 60 publications in high impact journals including Immunity, J. Exp. Med., J. Clin. Invest, Blood, and J. Immunol.
